The Participative Democracy and Accountability Action (PDA) project is funded by the European Union. It is being implemented by the Citizens’ Constitutional Forum in partnership with Conciliation Resources, Dialogue Fiji, Pacific Centre for Peacebuilding and Transcend Oceania.
The overall objective of the project is to strengthen democratic governance in Fiji through effective and sustained participation of civil society and marginalized groups in local and national policy making. The more specific objective is to strengthen the role of civil society and communities in Fiji’s transition to a more inclusive and accountable governance system, including through increased participation in policy formation processes and accountability mechanisms.
The Youth Democracy Seminar held by Dialogue Fiji had the overall aim of educating youth participants about democracy and democratic governance, Fiji’s constitution, bills of rights and peacebuilding approaches. The target of the workshop was to build the abilities of members with regards to peace promotion, debating and communication. Additionally, during this season of Pandemic, the seminar thoroughly covered Fiji’s national budget in response to COVID-19 Pandemic and other details on this virus.
The Youth Democracy Seminar was held for 2 days at FNU Natabua Campus’ AVA Room in Lautoka on Thursday 6th and Friday 7th of August, 2020. There were 27 participants in attendance ranging from university students to youth volunteers and FNU staff. The selection of participants ensured fairness in terms of ethnic groups and gender. Moreover, participants were really interactive in the discussions as well as in the presentations.
The entire programme was based on the Betzavta methodology which centers around participation and dynamic learning. Participants were given tasks and they had to come up with ideas and learn from the experiences from others while enriching their understanding of conflict and decision making. Dialogue Fiji ran the seminar to give the youths tools to expand their capacity to deal with circumstances in an informed and peaceful manner which is the biggest principle in the Betzavta method.
The programme was facilitated by Nilesh Lal (Executive Director), Moses Melvin Ram (Programme Officer) and Farisha Nigar (Finance and Admin Manager)
