The community education workshop, developed by Dialogue Fiji and co-facilitated by Dialogue Fiji and Pacific Centre for Peace building, was aimed at building the knowledge and skills of participants in the areas of human rights, state’s human rights obligations, 2013 Republic of Fiji’s Constitution and its Bill of Rights, Democracy and Conflict Analysis and Management approaches and tools.
The objectives of the workshop were to build skills of participants to utilise conflict analysis tools for conflict management and transformation, which are critical skills for building democratic cultures and societies and also to create spaces for participants to engage on human rights and democratic governance issues affecting them.
This Community Education workshop was held in Nausori on Friday 24th May, 2019. There were 23 youth participants in attendance ranging from students to youth volunteers and leaders. The diversity of participants ensured a wide range of views. Participants actively participated and contributed to discussions during the workshop.
The workshop used facilitation techniques such as group discussions, plenary discussions, group work on skills development for conflict analysis and management, and games on democracy and autocracy to ensure that participants were able to effectively engage on the content matter, and also develop their skills through practising the tools and approaches introduced.
One of the key learning mentioned by majority of the participants was the skill to resolve conflicts in future and their everyday lives. Since not many participants were that well informed about their human & constitutional rights, a major learning for them was knowing their rights and understanding the importance of exercising them. The participants also shared that they will utilize these learning by sharing with their family and peers as well as other youths in their communities.
